pretended cap read the book "The Birth of Purgatory " by Jacques Le Goff but has not been possible to locate on the Internet even some chapter of the same. Despite this, the search has proved unsuccessful, I located a couple of articles I am going to extract / comment. The first is entitled: " The idea of Purgatory "of Ana Luisa Ugarte Haindl, BA in History, Universidad Gabriela Mistral, 2004 and MA in Medieval Studies, University of Navarra, 2007.

According to Jacques Le Goff in the thirteenth century produced the "birth of purgatory." However, this does not mean that, before the thirteenth century, had not existed the notion of an intermediate place where souls are those 'not so good 'to enter direct to Heaven, and' not so bad 'to be condemned forever. A belief with many nuances, as to the times, the physical location would be purgatory, or the arrangements for the purification, accepted by the Latin Christians while the Greek Church defends the idea of a Heaven and Hell, it bluntly.

In the twelfth century the word purgatorium and, as Le Goff, would have produced a special sensitivity and a change of mindset to develop a greater concern for the fate of souls after death. Situation reflected in the wills and the increase of the prayers and Masses for the dead.

San Augustine, considered by Le Goff as the 'father of the Purgatorio', developed some ideas about this middle ground: not assign physical locations or specific times and although not defined, in defending the efficacy of the votes for the salvation of the deceased, will influence the popularity of this idea.

From folk traditions the idea of Purgatory will receive a boost thanks to the work of Odilon Abbot of Cluny , responsible for the establishment of the feast of All Souls, in the early XI, however the final push will give it to the late thirteenth century authors such as James of the Maelstrom (a we owe the famous image of St. George and the dragon, for instance) and Dante Alighieri.

The origin of the concept of Purgatory is located in a text in the biography that the monk was the abbot Odilon Jotsuad. Later, Pedro Damiano to write the life of the abbot, also included. Finally, in the thirteenth century, Jacobus de Voragine in the Golden Legend tells. Le Goff sees these three authors as evidence of evolution that will have the idea of Purgatory, controversial and undefined in the eleventh century, a fully accepted, in the XIII. That can be read the first written description of Purgatory:
"natural Rouergue a monk returning from Jerusalem. Exactly in the middle of the sea that stretches from Sicily to Thessalonica, found a very violent wind that pushed his vessel into a rocky island where he lived a hermit, servant of God. When our men saw that the sea is calm, began chatting with him about all sorts of things. The man of God asked him what nationality he was and he replied that of Aquitaine. Then the man of God wanted to know if he knew a monastery bearing the name of the abbot of Cluny and the same, Odilon. The monk replied, 'I know him very well, but I would like to know why I do this question " and another, 'I'm going to say, and I conjure you to never forget what you hear. Not far from us are some places that, for manifest will of God, the more violently throw a burning fire. The souls of sinners, for a given time, there are purged through various tortures. A crowd of demons is responsible for continually renew their torments: reviving sentences every day, making it increasingly intolerable pain. Sometimes, I myself have heard the lamentations of the men who complained vehemently mercy of God allows, in effect, that the souls of those convicted are freed from their sentences due to the prayers of the monks and handouts given to the poor in holy places. In their cries, are primarily directed to the community of Cluny and its abbot. "
arise in the twelfth century writings that recount many experiences, imagined or presented as revelations, describing the fate of the soul in Purgatory. The most important and influential is the story of an English Cistercian, written in 1190, telling the legend of a knight who entered the ' St. Patrick's Purgatory', situated on an island in Northern Ireland, the Red Lake in a cave, where they spend the pains of Purgatory, and if you resist a night, returns to earth completely purified and so scared, not again sin.

For Le Goff, in the thirteenth century the idea of Purgatory triumphs, accepting its existence as a time when the soul is purified of their sins before entering Heaven. This will have a significant impact on the attitude toward death will become increasingly necessary to prepare for a good death.

The notion of time is human and their own mortality. It is assumed that after death there is no time, but despite this, the only way for men to quantify the stay in Purgatory is measured in units of time. The prayers and masses that are made the deceased, sought to reduce the period of purification, according to medieval accounts, is usually short, a matter of days because one day there is equivalent to a year here.

indulgences gained in importance with the acceptance of the idea of Purgatory, because they give the possibility to amend the penalties caused by sin. One way to mitigate its effects is to achieve remission of punishment through merit, such as pilgrimages and donations. One idea formally established by Pope Clement VI in 1343. A century later at the Council of Florence issued a decree accepting the existence of Purgatory in 1439.

About Dante's work we see a special feature about it that the doctrine is defined. Beyond the fact of giving a specific geographical location (at the antipodes of Jerusalem), which the Church never accepted, the author of The Divine Comedy assigned to this function instead of purging the seven deadly sins, an idea that is not present among theologians, who speak of purgatory is to make amends for venial sins, a fact barely mentioned by Dante.

This comment belongs to the book club on the trilogy based on the Civil War Oscar Esquivias directed from La Acequia , Pedro Ojeda Escudero.
